Solved(P. Hall). Must a non-trivial group, which is isomorphic to each of its non-trivial normal subgroups, be either free of infinite rank, simple, or infinite cyclic? (Lennox, Smith and Wiegold, 1992, have shown that a finitely generated group of this kind which has a proper normal subgroup of finite index is infinite cyclic.)
